FROZEN LAKE
by Deborah Jo LarsonThis picture books is a great way to introduce ice fishing to your kiddo. It captures what it's like to be on the lake, ice fishing, without a single bite. Seven hours. Not one fish. Isn't that just how ice fishing goes? I also appreciate that it's such a local book, and was published by the Minnesota Historical Society.
KATY AND THE BIG SNOW
by Virginia Lee BurtonKaty, the crawler tractor, was big and strong. Is she strong enough to clear the roads when a big blizzard piles the drifts up to the second story windows? (Yes, yes, she is.) This is an older book, published in 1943, but it was a fun one to read this year considering ALL THE SNOW we've had in Minnesota!
IT'S SNOWING!
by Gail GibbonsThis book introduces kids to snow, where it falls, how it forms and how we can prepare when a snowstorm is approaching. We read it on a day when it was snowing.
THE SECRET LIFE OF A SNOWFLAKE
by Kenneth LibbrechtWritten by a physics professor and photographer, this book features some simply gorgeous images of snowflake crystals. When you're done with the book, check out his web site at: www.SnowCrystals.com.
WEATHER WATCH: SNOW
by Alice K. FlanaganPart of the Weather Watch series, this book offers a simple explanation of snow, along with lots of photographs.
A BED FOR THE WINTER
by Karen WallaceWe just love DK books. This tale follows a dormouse as she searches for a bed for the winter, stumbling across the beds many other animals have.
SWITCHING ON THE MOON: A VERY FIRST BOOK OF BEDTIME POEMS
collected by Jane Yolen and Andrew Fusek PetersI'm sneaking this wonderful collection of poetry in even though it isn't about winter, just because the book is so FANTASTIC! I love every poem in it. It helped my cabin fever!
